Have you decided to double the fun and dive into the dazzling world of twin hooping? Yesss! If you’re just starting out and starting to doubt your choices…Don’t…We’ve got you. Here are 10 of the most commonly asked questions about twin hooping, all answered with practical tips, tricks, and links to help you spin smoother.
Q1. What size hoops are best for twin hooping as a beginner?
Start with hoops that feel comfortable and balanced. A good rule of thumb…or fist in this case: make a fist, let your arms hang by your sides, and measure from the middle of your fist to the ground. Just about the ground is your sweet spot for figuring our your twin hoop sizing.
Q2. How do I stop my twin hoops from colliding in the side plane spinning?
It’s all about alignment. Keep your forearms parallel to the floor and your fingers pointing straight out to the sides. Imaging you’re standing in a hallway, and your fingers are gently grazing the walls on either side. This positioning keeps the hoops flowing in harmony.
Q3. What hand positions work best for twin tricks?
It depends on what you’re doing! Non-gripped moves like hand spins work best with palm down, palm in, or thump up.
Here is a solid training guide for front planes, with 4 key points and your fingers always pointing forward.
- 6 o’clock: palm down, low in your centreline
- 3 o’clock: palm out, thumb up, arm across body
- 12 o’clock: palm down, above the head
- 9 o’clock: palm in, arm open wide
Your 3 and 9’s will swap depending on the orientation of your spin. Training both arms and both directions will help you master plane control and open the door to a bunch more intricate moves.

Ah, the sneaky back plane. Here’s the trick:
- Relax your grip at the back and allow the hoop to fall
- Don’t bring your hand too far above your head
- Allow the hand to remain a bit out to your side rather than trying to get it right behind you
Trust in gravity. Less effort equals smoother back planes.
