Hoop Away is Australia’s only winter hula hoop retreat. An easy 1 hour drive from Melbourne, surrounded by native bushland, it is LUSH! An intimate setting with a maximum of 24 retreat participants and no more than 10 people in each workshop. The Hoop Away retreat is all about exploration, inspiration, connection, play, and taking your hooping to the next level. It’s a weekend away with a focus on YOU.

Hoop Away has a limit of only 24 participants, a hoop retreat that is a curated experience of flow, choreograph and technical workshops, offering a space to reconnect with body and spirit, expand your dance and be welcomed into a vibrant global community.

JENNIFER DENEHY

Pennsylvania, USA

Born in Buffalo, NY Jennifer began her dance training at the age of 3. Trained in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, African, hip-hop, hoop and creative dance, she holds a BA in Psychology from Mercyhurst College and also trained in Creative Dance @ LUNA Dance’s Summer Institute in Berkeley, CA.

For the past 7 years Jennifer has danced with Dafmark Dance Company. She teaches 25 weekly hoop and creative dance classes in Erie, PA, and is a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Rostered Teaching Artist. Her areas of specialization are integrating dance technique with the hoop, creating hoop dance choreography, teaching hoop dance to kids, teaching dance to individuals who has developmental and physical disabilities, and teaching dance to senior populations. In 2020 Jennifer will launch The Creative Hoop Dance Experience instructional videos available digitally.

In 2018, Jennifer was awarded an Emerging Artist Fellowship by Erie Arts & Culture. In 2015, Jennifer was awarded the Bruce Morton Wright Artist of the Year by Erie Arts & Culture as well as receiving two Top Hat Awards for Outstanding HoopDance Choreographer and Modern Contemporary HoopDance Fusion. Additionally, Jennifer came in 4th during the 2016 season of Hooping Idol. Nominated for the 2017 Hooping Video of the Year and received a 2017 Hoopie Awards Honorable Mention for her Hooping Idol 6: Horror week Video.

SPINJOY

Sydney, AUSTRALIA

Caitlyn is the founder of SpinJoy. She’s helped thousands of people of all ages, and from all walks of life, embrace the power of the hula hoop. Her passion is creating space for people to understand that joy and playful movement should be a priority.

Her mission is to use hula hoop dance as the catalyst to empower people to connect with their bodies in a joyful and positive way. She’s super passionate about creating space for women to feel empowered, sexy, silly and free with their bodies, with the goal of taking the focus of movement and exercise away from feelings of lacking or not good enough, and moving towards joyful body connection and self-expression.

Caitlyn’s hoop style is ultra-high energy. She’s about dancing in the hula hoop and oozing joyful energy that captivates and inspires people to join in.

SHONA

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA

Shona has been hooping since 2005 and specializes in circus-style multi-hooping. She has twirled her hoops up and down Australia and internationally. Boasting international tours, training, and performances in New Zealand, the UK, the EU, and China.

Shona is currently Melbourne based and works for internationally acclaimed company Dummies Corp. in their latest creation, Don’t mess with the Dummies. Shona also co-produces and co-stars in her own award-winning show, Big Glittery SH!TSHOW. When not performing, Shona is passionate about teaching amazing circus hoops tricks to other members of the community in Australia and abroad.

DONNA SPARX

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA

Donna is a hula hoop dancer, teacher, performer and lover with a background in Creative Arts.
Recognised globally for her creativity, innovation, flow facilitation and playful approach, she has taught thousands of people to hula hoop including at festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Strawberry Fields, The Pleasure Garden and Hoopy Happenings.

Donna has performed with the Women’s Circus, and brings a passion and playfulness to her work that is infectious.

Fuelled by a passion for transformation and growth on a personal, business, local and global level, she is a born facilitator with an appreciation for the power found in play and flow.

When not playing with or teaching hoops, Donna can be found training with the Women’s Circus, dancing, inventing new smoothies, getting out of the city, or deciding which leggings will best reflect her mood.

Her motto: Do it ‘til you can.

JO ASANA

Melbourne, AUSTRALIA

Jo has been teaching yoga for over 10 years and currently teaches Antigravity Aerial Yoga, Pilates, Yin and Vinyasa classes to small groups. She is a level 3 Senior teacher with Yoga Australia.

Jo’s creative approach adapts to each individual’s needs. She loves bringing yoga out of the studio and into the world and shares her meditations online via Insight Timer.

As a hooper herself, Jo loves experimenting with combinations of movements from all disciplines to nurture those stubborn niggles and tight spots that can develop, and to enhance the feeling of free-flowing movement in the body. She works with Internationally performing hoop artists, helping heal injuries, and reach their strength and flexibility goals. This body of knowledge continues to evolve as Jo’s focus is on helping each individual tune into their own body’s unique needs and equip them with a selection of self-care techniques to feel as fabulous as possible in their dance and their hoop!

Oh, and did I mention she’s super qualified:
Jo has Completed over 2000 hours of teacher training including Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teaching (CAE/Australian Institute of Yoga Therapy), Studio Pilates certification with Taube Pilates, SomaChi yoga certification with Lianne Metcalfe, and Myofasical Release and Yin Yoga teacher training with Jo Phee.

Over the course of 3 days, Hoop Away Victoria is designed to take your hoop skills to the next level. Explore the hoop through dance, tech workshops, choreography classes, stretching and yoga. This hoop retreat is your time, a beautiful opportunity for you to reconnect and redefine what you love about movement, hooping, and dance. A time to rest, giggle, shine, and chill.

Away from the constant buzz, days start with sublime offerings of gentle stretching, diary and reflection time.

Workshops

All workshops are included. Come to them all or take some time off to read, relax and wander the beautiful grounds at the Maitripa Centre.

Family Friendly Hula Hoop Retreat

 

So all you hoop mamas out there can get your hoop on without having to leave bubba at home.

Kids are welcome at the retreat and so is a partner/support person. And – you can share a family room!

Kids under 5 are free – we just ask that you bring your own baby change table and bed as the beds there aren’t safe for toddlers/infants.

How to make this magic happen? The additional charge for meals and accommodation for your partner/support person is $275 and this can either be added to your ticket if purchasing online, or added into your payment plan.

Note: For safety reasons, kids are not to enter the workshop spaces.
