I Iove that Donna works to make classes accessible regardless of experience and body type. She'll show us harder and easier variations of moves, so there's always opportunity to challenge yourself, but never any expectation to do more than is feasible for you.

Whether you are just starting out or have been hooping for some time, the focus is on technique, creativity and flow. You will learn on-body and off-body moves and tricks, hoop dance combos, hoopercise drills, circus tricks and techniques, and how to link moves together to create hula hoop dance flow.

Our hula hoop classes are a combination of inspiration, fitness, play and dance. Online & in-person hula hoop classes include instruction, practice and challenges for everyone.
Each move/trick will be taught to the group and then, as everyone practises, I will zoom in on each student and offer personalised trouble-shooting, tips and guidance to support you to really GET the moves.
There are 5-10 hoopers in every online class aged from about 20-65!
Each term runs for 8 weeks and each class focuses on different moves, tricks, drills, transitions and concepts. Classes don’t add on to each other so you can join at anytime although, people who come more regularly do start to get comfortable in the hula hoop and begin to pick things up a little quicker.
Classes run for 75 mins.
Online and in-person Melbourne hula hoop classes and workshops are on multiple weeknights so you’re bound to find a hula hoop class or workshop that suits you. 7:30pm AEST. The timetable changes regularly so please have a look! Sometimes there are classes 3 nights a week, sometimes less but there’s always a class to drop into!

Do I need to bring my own hula hoop to class?
Nope! If you don’t have your own hoop that’s okay, we bring hoops for you to use. And, we sanitise all hoops prior to the class and request students sanitise their hands upon entering the space too. So, not only do we supply hoops, we supply squeaky clean ones!
Are there hula hoop classes in my area?
Hoop Sparx hula hoop classes happen at various locations around Melbourne. Our classes run in the North, West, and Southern suburbs. Check out our live classes to find a class happening near you. If you’re not in Melbourne be sure to check out our online classes, courses and workshops.
Are the hula hoop classes for adults?
Yep! They sure are! All our live and online classes are designed for adult hoopers. So far we have welcomed hoopers up to 70 years of age into our classes, you’re never too old to learn to hoop! (Minimum age for class attendees is 14.)

Are the Melbourne hula hoop classes for beginners?
Yes! Our classes are suitable for first time hoopers right through to intermediate and more experienced hoopers. In class we will work together to build your hoop swag of tricks, find your connection with the hoop, discover your own flow.
Hoop Sparx hula hoop classes are structured so that every move is taught from the foundations up, building on the base move and adding variations and more advanced concepts to suit all levels in the room. Class instruction is to the whole group followed by one on one support and individual feedback in the class.
If I buy a hula hoop class pass, is it valid at all Melbourne locations?
Yep! Hoop Sparx class passes are valid for the duration of the term they were purchased for. The class pass can be used at any Hoop Sparx class location during this period. So if you miss a class – you can make it up at another location on a different night.
Will hula hoop classes help me lose weight?
Hula hooping can be used alongside a healthy diet to promote a healthy weight and waistline, as well as strengthening the core, increasing fitness and creating a BOSS level of balance.
Heaps of people have lost weight doing this super fun and active exercise! The key is that hula hooping is so much fun that it doesn’t really seem like exercise. Beyond anything, hula hooping is an activity that will make you feel GOOD in your body, and no matter your size, age, or background, hula hooping exercise releases endorphins and feel-good chemicals. More often than not, once you get inside the hoop, weight loss goals become less important and are replaced by a desire to have fun, feel healthy and happy and alive, and learn something new. When an activity/workout feels like PLAY, the more often you’re going to do it! Therefore it can be maintained and sustained as a fun, healthy activity over time. It’s lasted this long: hula hooping is a definite health winner.
How many calories does hula hooping burn?
There have been a few studies trying to figure out how many calories people burn from hula hooping. It varies depending on your age, size, fitness level, and gender. According to Livestrong:
As a general rule, the heavier you are, the higher your energy expenditure. Many people have lost a lot of weight quite quickly in the first few months of hula hooping, and then once their body balances out to a maintenance weight, find that the exercise of hula hooping becomes healthy maintenance rather than a weight-loss activity.
If you’re looking to BURN those calories, be sure to up the ante on the spin, and create a higher intensity practice by using arm movement, trialling legs together / stepping side to side, or even doing lunges while hula hooping. What is hula hooping good for?
Hula hooping is good for so many things! It’s a great way to get fit while having fun and meeting friendly new faces. Hula hooping is good for engaging our minds and bodies. Did we mention it’s a great way to have FUN! We’ve had hoopers let us know that they have found Hoop Sparx classes good for meditation, toning, cardio fitness, and playfulness.
Isn’t hula hooping for kids?
Hooping is for everyone! People from all walks of life are getting in on the spin. Even if you could never hoop as a child, the big, heavy hoops that we use in our adult classes rotate much slower, so it’s easier to keep them on your body.
Is it just standing there moving your hips for an hour?
Not at all, in fact far from it! There are a million and one ways to move with a hoop and engage all the muscles of your body. Plus it’s a fantastic way to release tension, elevate mood, re-energise and nurture creative expression.
Can men do it, or is it just for women?
Men can absolutely do it. Some of the best hoopers in the world are men. Hooping is inclusive of every gender, race, body type and physical ability.
Do I need to be young and slim?
NO! This is one of the biggest misconceptions out there. Hooping can be taken up at any age by anyone of any size. Students are generally aged 14-70! Injuries, range of motion, flexibility, co-ordination – none of these are barriers when it comes to hooping. And while it is a terrific workout, each class has options for everyone.
What about injuries?
Check with your medical practitioner first and, if they give you the go ahead come along. Let the hula hoop facilitator know about your injury and they can adapt some of the movements and/or provide alternate options as you heal and get stronger.
Do I have to wear unicorn tights and a neon wig?
Only if you want to! Just wear something you are comfortable to move in. Anything you would wear to exercise or a yoga class is perfect.
What if I can’t make it to the online hula hoop class?
All online hula hoop classes will be recorded with a link to download them sent out within 1 hour of the class finishing. So, if you miss an online hula hoop class, you can catch up and practise it in your own time.
